No-trust vote: Much ado about nothing

The opposition Congress Party in Madhya Pradesh assembly had to bite dust once again when the no-confidence motion moved by it fizzled out. It had to be since Congress failed to raise any worthwhile issue and levelled only false charges against Madhya Pradesh Government led by Chief Minister Mr Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Naturally, the no-confidence motion fell flat on its face, reports SMS News and Features.
The Congress has failed to realise that the state has gone places in development during the term of Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan as Chief Minister so far. The economic growth rate has touched 10 percent mark which is higher than the national average. Law and order situation continues to be better and Madhya Pradesh now ranks among first two-three states in development. Under such circumstances, it was obvious that the no-confidence motion was aimed at maligning the government’s image.
The State Congress should also realise the fact that the Central government led by Congress itself has not only praised the state government’s mining policy of 2010, but has also asked other states to emulate it.
It may be mentioned here that consensus between ruling and opposition parties on development issues is prerequisite for success of democracy and the opposition should lend a helping hand in development efforts. Mere words cannot eliminate corruption; it needs combined committed efforts. Corruption can be curbed by eliminating the role of black money in the system and by introducing state funding. The state government has chalked out a self-employment scheme for the minorities. A Nikah scheme for Muslim girls under Mukhya Mantri Kanyadan Yojana. This no-confidence motion was indeed an ideal example of how false propaganda can be made with so much confidence.
A number of records have been established during the debate on this motion. This was the longest ever debate of a no-confidence motion n the history of Madhya Pradesh Assembly. The opposition must realise that debate is the pre-requisite of democracy, but the charges should not be baseless. The opposition should not insult the constitutional institutions so unabashedly and meaninglessly.
The decorum of the august House was battered during the debate. Many traditions have been established with are against established norms and practices of democracy. Even sub-judice matters were discussed. Allegations were made against those who are no more in this world. Despite clear cut ruling of the chair personal allegations and charges on pre-2008 matters were made. The opposition parties should see reason and ensure that they go by best democratic and ethical norms with a view to saving democracy and decency in politics.
The opposition may not have confidence in the government for their queer reasons, but it enjoys the confidence of the people. Politics is not cricket game for the government. It is a medium to serve the people. Perhaps successive wins of the BJP in the by-elections, would have inspired the Congress to take recourse to no-trust motion to malign the State Government so that it can have political mileage in the next elections .
